Black Gnat Wet Fly

The Black Gnat is a traditional wet fly I like to fish whenever the fish are not actively feeding on a hatch and bugs are in the air. It’s very effective when fished in The black gnat wet fly is a simple fly to tie. It is a forgiving fly that really does not need exact precisonthis manner – as a searching fly. Additionally, it is an easy fly to tie. It can easily tied right at stream side if necessary.

The best hooks for this fly are:

Mustad 3906 sizes 10 – 14

Fly Dressing:

Thread: black 6/0

Body: Black chenille

Hackle: Black cock or hen

Tail: Black cock hackle fibers

Wing: Grey Mallars wing quill

Although versions of the Black Ghost streamer fly were tied as early as 1919, the version used today was first introduced in 1927. A well known taxidermist,

The black ghost streamer fly is meant to be fished on sinking line within the water column

guide, and an accomplished artist and sculptor by the name of Herb Welsh created the black ghost fly pattern around 1927.

The black ghost streamer fly pattern is a must for any person’s tackle box. Fished in lakes, streams or rivers this pattern takes fish. Fished at mid-level in head water or tail water should elicit a strike. Whenever I come across panfish like the pumpkinseed, I like to fish them with flies. The black ghost streamer fly is a great fly to use. Fished below the surface right near schooling fish leads to strikes.

Sizes: 4-6-8-10-12 or Tandem Troller 2 & 4

Fly Recipe:

Thread: 3/0 or 6/0 black

Tail: Yellow Hackle Fibers

Body: Black Floss – tappered at both ends and full in the middle

Ribbing: Flat Silver Tinsel

Throat: Sparsely tied yellow hackle fibers

Wing: White saddle hackle or marabou

Cheeks: Jungle cock

Fish this fly in medium running clear streams. Strip the line to make it attractive. I find this fly good for pan fish as well.

Tail: Black Hackle – want a slightly different look tie on Golden pheasant tippets instead.

Body: Orange Floss

Wing: Black – crow quill for the wing. This works well since I am not a crow fan and will shoot them. Never let anything go to waste!!

The American March Brown was developed as an imitation of an early mottled wing mayfly. Preston Jennings originated this pattern, with Art Flick. This is one of the many offshoots of adams dry flies and light cahills.

The American March Brown is an early emerger with a hatch cycle that runs from mid-May until mid-July.

Sizes: 12-14-16-18

Fly Recipe:

Thread: Orange 6/0

Tail: Reddish brown hackle barbs

Body: Tan red fox belly fur – or imitation fur

Wing: Barred wood duck flank

Hackle: Brown and grizzle mixed

Adams Wet Flyadams wet fly is a good wet fly for fly fishing a a great addition to your tackle box for regular fishing

The Adams wet fly will help increase your hook-ups on a given day of wet fly angling. It is a good all-round generic looks-like-a-bug wet fly.I find this a pretty easy fly pattern to tie. The adams wet fly is also a decent fly to fish. When doing regular fishing, I like to use it as a “follower” behind plugs or rapala lures.

The best hooks for this fly are:

Mustad # 3906 or # 94840
Sizes: 10 – 20

Fly Tying Recipe:

Thread: Black 6/0. Gray thread also works.

Tip: Gold tinsel, optional

Tail: Brown and grizzly hen fibers, mixed

Ribbing: None, though optionally, you could use fine gold wire.

Body: Dark gray muskrat or rabbit fur dubbed

Hackle: Brown and grizzly hen – one turn of each

Wing: Grizzly hackle tips, paired facing in, back-to-back as shown

Black Ant Dry FlyThe black ant dry fly is a simple pattern to tie and works well for trout as well as panfish

The black ant pattern has been around for many years. Books I have read indicate the black ant goes back to the early 1800’s but I assume this fly dates back further.

The black ant is an easy fly to tie. There are literally dozens of patterns being tied. In a pinch I have used nothing but black thread and a sparse black hackle. The black ant works well when hatches are not occurring and the trout are active.

Sizes: 12-14-16-18-20

Fly Recipe:

Thread: Black

Abdomen: Black beaver dubbed

Thorax: Black beaver dubbed

Legs: Black hackle – tied in middle and sparingly
